Industries, institutions, businesses, and households consume large amounts of energy for lighting, equipment, machinery, cooking, and heating. Most of these facilities use different types of biomass and petroleum technologies for cooking and heating which have varied levels of efficiency. Available data show that only a small number use cleaner fuels such as LPG, biogas, or higher tier biomass stoves and fuels. The use of cleaner fuels and technologies including electric induction cookers can lead to lower energy costs, a cleaner environment, better health and environmental sustainability as well as climate change mitigation.
Use of energy in institutions and commercial establishments is generally inefficient, while the consumption of firewood and charcoal is expensive and unsustainable. The dependence on biomass fuels has negative effects including high costs, poor health, environmental degradation, and climate change. The high penetration rate of improved cooking and heating technologies, coupled with the well-developed LPG supply chain, offers an opportunity to retrofit biomass technologies, thus relieving pressure on forests and guaranteeing better health.
